The HEC Indigenous Scholarship selection process for medical colleges under FATA and Balochistan was underway when the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) attempted to reduce or take away the allocated seats for these students. However, students, parents, and supporters from FATA and Balochistan strongly opposed this decision, raising their voices in protest.
Historical Context of Reserved Seats
For several years, 333 seats have been allocated to students from FATA and Balochistan on a 50/50 shared basis. However, PMDC attempted to reduce this number back to 194, similar to the allocations in 2018/19. This raised concerns about the future of students from these regions. The question remains: Why is there a continuous effort to limit educational opportunities for FATA and Balochistan students?
A Tribal Leader’s Intervention
Amidst this challenge, former Senator Mirza Afridi, a true representative of his people, stood up for the rights of students from his region. Through his efforts, PMDC’s attempt to reduce the seats was largely defeated. During the meeting, it was concluded that FATA and Balochistan students need even more seats. While an immediate increase may not be possible, it was firmly decided that the existing seats will not be reduced.
Acknowledgment of Collective Efforts
Every individual who contributed to this cause, whether through advocacy, protests, or legal action, deserves appreciation. Leaders like Shaheed Usman Lala, Mohsin Dawar, and Mirza Afridi are among the shining stars fighting for the educational rights of FATA and Balochistan students.
Moving Forward – A Call for Unity
We all have a duty towards our homeland and its future. While challenges persist, the unity of FATA and Balochistan students and supporters has ensured that, despite repeated attempts, PMDC has never been successful in taking away these rights.
Let’s stay united, strong, and determined in safeguarding our educational rights!
